  • Money's Dumb, Mark II

*sigh* So, we are not always the best at remembering to pay stuff. To fix this, we get as much as we can automatically deducted from our account. Our Explorer is financed through Bank of America, while we have our checking and savings accounts at Washington Mutual. I've loved banking at WaMu, until last week. A little history.... It was hard to remember to make the truck payment, so I asked about automatic deduction while I was making a payment. The teller told me that it was possible but a lot of work. It would be easier to set it up on WaMu's online bill pay. Okay, well Cat was a little leary of it, but I figured it should be fine. She followed the instructions and set it up. We wanted the check to arrive at BoA on the 15th, so the site suggested we set it up for the 12th. We did this in July. In August, when the first payment was "sent" it was also deducted from the account on the 12th, well I don't get paid until the 15th. So to remedy the situation, we changed the date to the 15th instead of the 12th for the check to be sent out. Then in September WaMu decided to send out a check on the 12th (complete with another insufficient funds charge) as well as the 15th. So I call them on Friday the 16th so that they could cancel the check (and perhaps revoke the insufficient funds charge). After spending 45 minutes on the phone, she tells me that since it was bill pay who made the mistake they would call me on Monday, I even updated our phone number with them. Monday came and went, Tuesday came and went. I didn't get a chance to call on Wednesday, but this morning I made time to call them again. We hadn't received the phone call nor our money back. The woman I talked to today said that the other woman informed me incorrectly, they would not be calling, but instead sending a form that we could fill out to get reimbursed for the insufficient funds. What about my $350 I demand? This is why I called right away! She suggests that I call BoA and ask them refund the $350. I told her, it wasn't their mistake, they could happily refuse to refund it, and I would agree with them. I mean it's a loan after all, and a payment was made on it, why would they let the payment be "unmade"? It seemed rediculous. "I'm sorry, there's nothing else I can do for you." Fine. So I go to BoA and wait in line to speak with a teller. I explain the situation and she directs me to some phones where I can make arrangements with the loan people. After navigating (incorrectly I guess) through the phone system I get someone who transfers me somewhere else. Then a woman with the thickest southern accent you have ever heard, heard my story. She said they'd refund the $350, it would take 3 business days to do so, and then the check would be mailed to me. Turns out, when WaMu pays the BoA bill, they actually electronically transfer it (I infer this from the payments posting at BoA on the same days that "the check" left WaMu), so there would've been no way for WaMu to cancel the check in the first place. Why did the person not tell me this last week? Now I will have another week of insufficient funds charges 'cause my account is $350 shy, then I will have to argue with the bank over two weeks of charges which I doubt I will get back unless I spend an inordinate amount of time bitching. And none of it was our fault! I want to close our accounts at WaMu and go someplace else, but honestly I don't think there's any place "better". Plus there are all these bills that already get automatically deducted from our account there, which makes the cost of switching very high.
